About Swiss Timing

The Swiss company Swiss Timing is a global leader in the development and production of electronic timing and scoring systems for sporting events and the official timekeeper of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The contract between Swiss Timing and the IOC was extended again in 2017 and covers all Olympic Games until 2032.

History of Swiss Timing

Swiss Timing was founded in Switzerland in 1972, but its roots trace back to the early 20th century when its "parent" companies, Omega and Longines, became pioneers in sports timing. The first documented involvement of Omega in a sports competition dates back to 1904, when the company's specialists conducted the timing for the Gordon Bennett Cup balloon race.

Almost 30 years later, at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Omega was fully responsible for timing all events. Longines also served as the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games, both independently and in collaboration with Omega.

Experts in sports timing from Omega and Longines joined forces and signed the founding documents of Swiss Timing in July 1972 in Biel.

Innovative Achievements

There is no doubt that timing is one of the key elements that makes sporting events captivating. Without precise measurement of time and distances that separate the winner from the other participants, the very essence of competition would be impossible. Without timing, there would be no world or Olympic records.

Swiss Timing possesses unmatched expertise in the field of sports timing.
Swiss Timing specialists are dedicated to the art of measuring time with high precision and reliability, developing technologies that meet the strictest standards in every sport.
It is Swiss Timing that has created and adapted the latest technologies for measuring results at the most prestigious sporting events in the world. Among the landmark innovations of Swiss Timing are:

  • Electronic starting system
  • Starting blocks and false start detection systems
  • Scan’O’Vision photo-finish cameras
  • Photoelectric sensors
  • Transponders
  • Wind measurement systems
  • Touchpads for swimming pools

At the largest international sports competitions, no one can predict who will stand on the podium. But one thing is certain: their winning, and sometimes record-breaking, results will be measured, recorded, and published for viewers worldwide by Swiss Timing and its partner brands within the Swatch Group.
Sport is a blend of pure emotion and absolute irrationality mixed with moments of absolute precision, complete objectivity, and black and white results – an admirable contradiction of the heart and mind. Swiss Timing has been an exceptional ambassador.
